Thousands of Catholics expected as OC Diocese unveils Vietnamese shrine – CBS Los Angeles
GARDEN GROVE (CBSLA) – The Cathedral of Christ will celebrate its second anniversary on Saturday as the main cathedral of the Diocese of Orange with the unveiling of a shrine reflecting the faithful in Vietnam.
Our Lady of La Vang sanctuary is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Roman Catholics believe that she appeared in 1798 to a group of Catholics in a tropical forest in Vietnam.

“This shrine dedicated to Our Lady of La Vang is not only another example of how beauty attracts to God, but it is a testament to the faith of our Vietnamese brothers and sisters who have contributed so much to the life of our parishes here in Orange County. , and which then directs us all to the Mother of God and her protection, ”said the Bishop of the Diocese of Orange, Kevin Vann.
The Solemn Blessing Day ceremony is expected to bring together thousands of Orange County Catholics.

“The Vietnamese community of Orange County and I are very happy that this shrine of Our Lady of La Vang is solemnly blessed,” said Bishop Thanh Thai Nguyen. “In remembering the blessings received from his intercessions, we wish to honor him in a special place to express our deep gratitude to his past accompaniment and to ask him to continue walking with us on our pilgrimage of life. Our hearts are filled with joy and gratitude as we look forward to seeing Our Lady of La Vang here on our beautiful Christ Cathedral campus. “
The 12-foot-tall shrine weighs around 16,000 pounds and was carved from white Italian marble, officials said. The $ 12.6 million statue took approximately 18 months to carve and will be placed in the northeast corner of the Christ Cathedral campus.
